Daily, practical rituals were an important part of our family life. We had rituals around dishwashing, around money and allowances, even around chores and who did them. Especially important were the rituals around after school time and bed time.

A ritual is something we do regularly that has purpose and meaning in it. Our bed time ritual was the same every evening although both Ruth and I stayed flexible when there was a holiday or other special event. Even on such nights the basic structure of the bedtime ritual was held firm. We feel our children owe their incredible confidence and poise somewhat to this beneficial social form.
