DISCIPLINE
With the first three children we learned a lot. By then we generally knew what we were doing and our parenting style was established. The older children have also learned a lot and frequently came to our rescue. So, my feelings about discipline are largely learned from my wife, Ruth, who just about ran the whole shebang! I did all the important things like establishing a career, earning some money, traveling around the world on business, and wearing Brooks Brothers suits. Ruth did the less important things like managing the household, raising the children, deciding where we should live, picking the schools our children attended, and maintaining the family’s religious life and our family values, etc. By now you must realize how much I loved and appreciated this wonderful woman that I was fortunate enough to marry.
She also modeled for me the simple but important things like discipline. The reason our family life ran so smoothly is because we never needed what so many people call discipline. Our practical definition of it was turned around 180 degrees. The common definition involves “what you do after your children misbehave.” Ruth demonstrated it as “what you do before they misbehave.”
